Train operators SMRT and SBSTransit will be fined a total of S$1.11 million for 5 incidents that occurred in the last year.
SMRT will be penalised S$860,000 for four separate incidents — the Newton station fire, the train launching incident at Bukit Panjang LRT depot, rail defects on the circle line and an incident at Ulu Pandan depot where staff were put in danger while carrying out track works.
SBSTransit will be penalised S$250,000 for a service disruption on the North-East line. The incident took place on June 19, during the latest haze episode in Singapore.
The fines will be donated to the public transport fund to help needy families with transport fares.
