of why i let my 9-year-old ride the subway alone

Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone: Lenore Skenazy left her 9-year old sons alone in a shopping mall and let him find his way back home. For weeks her son begged her to leave him somewhere, anywhere, and let him try to figure out how to get home on his own.
I left my 9-year-old at Bloomingdale’s (the original one) a couple weeks ago. Last seen, he was in first floor handbags as I sashayed out the door. Bye-bye! Have fun! And he did. He came home on the subway and bus by himself. Was I worried?
Would you let your kid do the same in Singapore? I know of someone who let their 8-year old kid take the plane alone because the kid begged them to do so.

  1. if it's a guy i would. but it would be a incremental process. juz like what richard branson experience before.

i think its a good way to train the child's independence and thinking skill

  2. When I was nine, I boarded a flight without my parents!

It was so exciting, and absolutely nothing to worry about because an air stewardess chaperoned me all the way from departure hall till arrival hall where my parents were waiting.

Don't remember how I got to the airport though, haha!

  3. LOL in my first year of primary school, my parents were busy with work and quite a few times the principal would send me home as I was the last one still waiting in school.

Once my parents were late again and the principal wasn't around so I started walking home.

You can imagine my mum's panick when she didn't find me waiting in school. Eventually they found me on a major road halfway towards home (I must have walked about 1 hour by then).

They were more relieved than angry - I guess that kinda gave them the assurance I could take care of myself independently.

I guess it wasn't that big a deal until I read your post :p

  4. That's crazy! Some people just should not be parents. 9 is not an acceptable age to begin training a child's independence and thinking skills by leaving them alone in a huge store to find their own way home!
