Lucie Blackman, the murdered British bar hostess who disappeared in Japan on 1 July 2000
A court in Japan today found a serial rapist guilty of kidnapping, mutilating and abandoning the body of the Briton Lucie Blackman in a partial reversal of an earlier ruling acquitting him of involvement in her death.
Joji Obara, a wealthy Japanese property developer, was acquitted last year of killing the 21-year-old, but was found guilty of raping nine other women and killing one of them.

I feel Japan has a much more relaxed attitude to rape than the West has. Sometimes, they even praise it. Recently, I blogged about Rapeman, a Japanese superhero who rapes women -- but only if they deserve it. None of his victims feel like victims, and almost all of them feel better for being raped. I think it's this cultural context that allowed what what happened to Lucie Blackman. And that is tragic.
