Tournament referee Brian Earley says early hospital tests indicate that Victoria Azarenka's dramatic retirement from the US Open on Wednesday was not heat-related.
As temperatures again soared above 30 degrees, and the extreme heat rule in effect at Flushing Meadows, Azarenka collapsed on the Grandstand court and required a wheelchair back to the women's locker room.
The Belarussian 10th seed was trailing Argentine Gisela Dulko 5-1 at the time and was visibly struggling before her legs gave way.
