A fire broke out at Marina Bay Suites, leaving two dead. The two victims are Ms Sooria Kala Kanaseon, a 34-year-old Malaysian, and Mr Sim Lai Huat, a 58-year-old Singaporean. They were security officers at Marina Bay Suites.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Ms Tiara Zhang Zhi Zhen, who has represented Singapore in competitive ballroom dancing, has been warded into a Hong Kong hospital and is in a coma.

On the cool wintry morning of Dec 29, dancer Tiara Zhang Zhi Zhen woke up to the crackle and heat of flames engulfing the Hong Kong guesthouse she was staying at for a Christmas holiday.

Instead of dashing to safety right away, the 33-year-old Singaporean rushed to the rooms of other guests, hammering on doors and helping people to flee the smoke-filled firetrap.

In the process, Ms Zhang inhaled too much smoke. The oxygen flow to her brain was cut off, her heart stopped, and she was unconscious by the time she was taken to hospital.

A fire at a SingTel facility on Wednesday affected various companies, including local telcos StarHub and M1 as well as DBS and OCBC banks.

OCBC said that services at 11 ATMs were affected, in locations such as Changi Airport, Jurong Point, Woodlands, Bukit Panjang, while DBS advised its customers to avoid DBS/POSB branches at Toa Payoh Central, Bukit Panjang, Jurong Point, Woodlands and Raffles Place until SingTel restores network connectivity.

DBS Bank said that the fire, which took place at SingTel's Bukit Panjang exchange at about 2pm, "affected a small proportion of DBS/POSB branches, ATMs and AXS services".
