Just when it looked like a punch might be thrown during the WNBA playoff game between the Phoenix Mercury and the Minnesota Lnyx, Diana Taurasi surprised everyone: She kissed Seimone Augustus on the cheek.

Taurasi's Mercury were being routed by Augustus and the Lynx in the opening game of the WNBA Western Conference Finals when the two All-Stars, who have been playing against each other for years and were teammates on the U.S. women's national team, appeared to be exchanging some heated words. There was certainly some pushing and a shoulder check. Before officials could separate Taurasi and Seimone, the former UConn star unexpectedly planted a kiss on Augustus. Both players were issued personal fouls on the play.

Taurasi told reporters after the game:

Russian athlete Yelena Isinbayeva says she may have been "misunderstood" over comments condemning homosexuality and insists she is against discrimination.

In response, earlier this week, United States runner Nick Symmonds dedicated his world 800m silver medal to his gay and lesbian friends, while Swedish high jumper Emma Green-Tregaro painted her fingernails in the colours of the rainbow flag. Speaking in English at a news conference, Isinbayeva had said of Green-Tregaro's actions.

It's disrespectful to our country, disrespectful to our citizens because we are Russians. Maybe we are different than European people and people from different lands. We have our law which everyone has to respect. When we go to different countries, we try to follow their rules. We are not trying to set our rules over there. We are just trying to be respectful. We consider ourselves, like normal, standard people, we just live boys with women, girls with boys. It comes from the history. I hope the problem won't ruin our Olympic Games in Sochi.

Scientists say they can explain Usain Bolt's extraordinary speed with a mathematical model. His 100m time of 9.58 seconds during the 2009 World Championships in Berlin is the current world record. They say their model explains the power and energy he had to expend to overcome drag caused by air resistance, made stronger by his frame of 6ft 5in. Writing in the European Journal of Physics, the team hope to discover what makes extraordinary athletes so fast. According to the mathematical model proposed, Bolt's time of 9.58 seconds in Berlin was achieved by reaching a speed of 12.2 metres per second, equivalent to about 27mph.

Sixty children from The Guardian Academy and students from Singapore Association for the Deaf's affiliated schools were given an opportunity to meet footballer David Beckham.

I have great memories of this city as it was here that London won the 2012 Olympic bid. Coming back and seeing these kids today has been an inspiration to me. I'm honoured to be invited to the Marina Bay Sands and to launch this community sports initiative. This is a beautiful hotel, and Singapore is one of the most forward looking cities in the world.

Singapore Silat head, Sheik Alauddin, wants Jessie Phua to apologise.

Sheik’s fury stems from the omission of the Sportsman of the Year accolade from this year’s awards, after a selection committee determined that no male athlete had achieved anything of note in 2012.

Silat world champion Muhd Shakir Juanda was one of four nominated for the honour, along with paddler Gao Ning, sailor Colin Cheng and wushu exponent Seet Wee Key.

While explaining the decision not to award a Sportsman of the Year to various media, Phua said the panel had to “consider the quality of the competition” faced by the athletes.

The NCAA has penalized a student-athlete from a West Coast Conference school for the unspeakable crime of washing her car with the university's water and hose. A WCC school self-reported an extra benefits violation when university officials caught one of their women's golfers washing her car on campus, according to the source. A secondary violation was ruled to have occurred because the water and hose were not available to regular students and requested the golfer pay back $20, which was deemed to be the value of the water and use of the hose.

Perez sustained damage to his MP4-28’s brake ducts and Raikkonen’s E21 picked up a puncture after the duo collided at the Nouvelle chicane on lap 69 whilst disputing fifth position. After a pit stop Raikkonen recovered to finish tenth, but Perez had to park his car after his brakes overheated.
