Yesterday's SXSWi panel on Reddit, "It's Reddit's Web. We Just Live In It," featuring speakers Farhad Manjoo (Slate), Adrian Chen (Gawker) and Rebecca Watson (SkepChick), got a little awkward during the Q&A period when Imgur founder Alan Schaaf decided to take the panel to task for not recognizing the good that Reddit has accomplished since its foundation.

Facebook said that its internal computer network was hacked in "a sophisticated attack" last month. No data was compromised.

Last month, Facebook Security discovered that our systems had been targeted in a sophisticated attack. This attack occurred when a handful of employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised. The compromised website hosted an exploit which then allowed malware to be installed on these employee laptops. The laptops were fully-patched and running up-to-date anti-virus software. As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day.

We have found no evidence that Facebook user data was compromised.

Twitter announced that it had been the target of a sophisticated attack.
We discovered one live attack and were able to shut it down in process moments later. However, our investigation has thus far indicated that the attackers may have had access to limited user information — usernames, email addresses, session tokens and encrypted/salted versions of passwords — for approximately 250,000 users.

Facebook Charging In 2011: Chain Letter Spreads False Rumor (PICTURES)
Is Facebook about to start charging its users to access the social network? No, but a new chain letter making its way across Facebook walls wants you to think so.

This rumor comes after Facebook's recent f8 conference in San Francisco, where the company announced sweeping changes to its Open Graph platform, allowing more sharing than ever before. During the event, Facebook also unveiled a radical new profile layout that will significantly change the look of users' personal pages.

The chain letter claiming Facebook will begin charging this year alleges that the site must charge its users a fee to pay for the new profile design.

The phony warning reads thus:

IT IS OFFICIAL. IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES. IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU. PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON, IF NOT YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED IF YOU DO NOT PAY

Tumblr just hit their 10 billionth post
Surprise surprise, I just finished up sharing a new blog post and bam, I get hit with virtual confetti and a message on the Tumblr dashboard that Tumblr has reached its 10 billionth post. I wish I was that person that submitted the historic post, but don’t think I am that lucky. It’s nice to see though that Tumblr is growing at such a fast (and competitive) rate. I really believe that Tumblr is becoming the go-to place to blog for hobbyists and professionals. There was some rocky times last year, but so far in 2011 the platform has been stable and showing great improvements.

why do they think this is OK?: Mozilla's Asa Dotzler blogs about Apple, Microsoft and Google installing software plug-ins, without permission, into the Firefox Web browser. He calls the action of installing these plug-ins without consent 'sneaky, underhanded, and wrong'.

He cautioned 'Microsoft, stop being evil. Apple, stop being evil. Google, stop being evil.'

Extracted from Asa Dotzler's post titled 'why do they think this is OK?',
Why do Microsoft, Google, Apple, and others think that it is an OK practice to add plug-ins to Firefox when I'm installing their software packages. When I installed iTunes, in order to manage my music collection and sync to my iPod, why did Apple think it was OK to add the iTunes Application Detector plug-in to my Firefox web browser without asking me? Why did Microsoft think it was OK to sneak their Windows Live Photo Gallery or Office Live Plug-in for Firefox into my browser (presumably) when I installed Microsoft Office? What makes Google think it's reasonable behavior for them to slip a Google Update plug-in into Firefox when I installed Google Earth or Google Chrome (not sure which one caused this) without asking me first?

This is not OK behavior....In my book, that fits the definition of a trojan horse. Yes, that is precisely how a trojan horse operates. These additional pieces of software installed without my consent may not be malicious but the means by which they were installed was sneaky, underhanded, and wrong.

I repeat: this is not OK.

......Microsoft, stop being evil. Apple, stop being evil. Google, stop being evil. And you upstarts like RockMelt, don't follow in those evil footsteps. It's not worth it.

It's really simple. ASK first!

Facebook users 'are insecure, narcissistic and have low self-esteem': Using Facebook is the online equivalent of staring at yourself in the mirror, according to a study, which was published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behaviour And Social Networking. Researcher Soraya Mehdizadeh from York University in Canada conducted the study on 100 students.
Using Facebook is the online equivalent of staring at yourself in the mirror, according to a study.

Those who spent more time updating their profile on the social networking site were more likely to be narcissists, said researchers.

Facebook provides an ideal setting for narcissists to monitor their appearance and how many ‘friends’ they have, the study said, as it allows them to thrive on ‘shallow’ relationships while avoiding genuine warmth and empathy.

They also tend to use the site for promoting themselves to friends or people they would like to meet, the study concluded.

Researcher Soraya Mehdizadeh from York University in Canada asked 100 students, 50 male and 50 female, aged between 18 and 25 about their Facebook habits.

They all took psychology tests to measure their levels of narcissism, which the study defined as ‘a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and an exaggerated sense of self-importance’. Those who scored higher on the narcissism test checked their Facebook pages more often each day than those who did not. There was also a difference between men and women – men generally promoted themselves by written posts on their Facebook page while women tended to carefully select the pictures in their profile.

The findings, published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behaviour And Social Networking, also suggested that those with low self-esteem also checked their Facebook pages more regularly than normal.
