Obama announces end of Iraq war, troops to return home by year end: President Obama announced Friday that the United States will withdraw nearly all troops from Iraq by the end of the year, effectively bringing the long and polarizing war in Iraq to an end.

THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon, everybody. As a candidate for President, I pledged to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end -- for the sake of our national security and to strengthen American leadership around the world. After taking office, I announced a new strategy that would end our combat mission in Iraq and remove all of our troops by the end of 2011.

As Commander-in-Chief, ensuring the success of this strategy has been one of my highest national security priorities. Last year, I announced the end to our combat mission in Iraq. And to date, we’ve removed more than 100,000 troops. Iraqis have taken full responsibility for their country’s security.

A few hours ago I spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki. I reaffirmed that the United States keeps its commitments. He spoke of the determination of the Iraqi people to forge their own future. We are in full agreement about how to move forward.

So today, I can report that, as promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year. After nearly nine years, America’s war in Iraq will be over.

Pilot moonlights as father to 47: Budi Soehardi, a 53-year-old Indonesian pilot living in Singapore, founded the West Timor Roslin Orphanage. He and his wife, Peggy, looks after 47 children at the orphanage.

At Roslin Orphanage, children giggle through deep concentration as they try to master the "Chicken Dance." It's a far cry from the Indonesian orphans' earlier months and years.

"They are cheerful-looking and photogenic, but close to all have a very sad story," said Budi Soehardi, founder of the West Timor orphanage.

"Some of the babies come because a mother passes away right after delivery because of lack of nutrition. Others come from extreme poverty. Some come from families [that] just do not want the children and abandon them," he said.

Soehardi, a 53-year-old Indonesian pilot living in Singapore, and his wife, Peggy, look after 47 children at the orphanage. They have a personal relationship with each one, and consider them part of their family. The couple named many of the children since they entered the orphanage as babies -- some of them tiny victims and refugees from the conflict in East Timor.
The others in the top 10 list are:

Efren Peñaflorida - Efren Peñaflorida gives Filipino youth an alternative to gang membership through education. His Dynamic Teen Company's 10,000 members have taught basic reading and writing to 1,500 kids living in the slums.

Brad Blauser - Brad Blauser is providing hope and mobility to disabled children and their families in Iraq. Since 2005, his Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids program has distributed nearly 650 free pediatric wheelchairs to children in need.

Derrick Tabb - Derrick Tabb started The Roots of Music to give young people an alternative to New Orleans' streets. His music education program provides free tutoring, instruments and music instruction to more than 100 students.

Roy Foster - Army veteran Roy Foster started Stand Down House to help veterans struggling with addiction and homelessness in Florida. Since 2000, his program has provided life-changing services to nearly 900 veterans.

Jorge Munoz - School bus driver Jorge Munoz is helping hungry New Yorkers make it through tough times. Since 2004, he has handed out more than 70,000 meals from his mobile soup kitchen in Queens -- for free.

Doc Hendley - Bartender Doc Hendley is providing clean water to communities worldwide. Through creative fundraising, his nonprofit Wine to Water has brought sustainable water systems to 25,000 people in five countries.

Andrea Ivory - Breast cancer survivor Andrea Ivory is bringing early detection to the doorsteps of uninsured women. With mobile mammography vans, her group has provided more than 500 free screenings in Miami, Florida.

Betty Makoni - Zimbabwe native Betty Makoni founded the Girl Child Network to provide a haven for young victims of sexual abuse. The organization has rescued more than 35,000 girls since 2001.

Jordan Thomas - Jordan Thomas, 20, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, lost both of his legs in a boating accident in 2005. Since then, his Jordan Thomas Foundation has raised more than $400,000 to provide prosthetics for children in need.

In amazing show of athleticism, Obama kills housefly in mid-air: President Obama kills a housefly during a TV interview by CNBC’s John Harwood. See the video below
Who says President Obama is weak on defense? It was almost like watching that scene from Karate Kid when Mr. Miyagi showed Daniel how to kill a fly with his chopsticks. Except it was the White House version of it. And no less dramatic. President Obama played the part of the seasoned Sensei while CNBC’s John Harwood was the hapless kid played by Ralph Macchio. Yes, it was high drama in the East Room today.

In a move only rivaled by President Bush’s ducking of two flying Iraqi shoes back in December, President Obama nailed the fly in mid-air sending the insect to an early but much deserved grave.

It wasn’t as though Obama set out to kill the fly originally. He warned the fly more than once. “Get out of here,” Obama told the fly, waving his hands (to express the seriousness of the situation). Harwood, noting the relentless nature of the insect, said to the president, “That’s the most persistent fly I’ve ever seen.” But not once did the reporter offer to assist Obama. That’s when Obama took things into his own lightning fast hands pulverizing the insect like Miyagi or even Chuck Norris might do.

Moments passed before a stunned Harwood stammered, “Nice…”

Cool Hand Obama looked at the humbled reporter and said, “Now, where were we.”

“That was pretty impressive, wasn’t it?” Obama said gloating over his fresh kill. “I got the sucker. What do you think, Gibbs?”

His press secretary must have been stunned as well as he didn’t respond to the president’s question. Obama then directed the CNBC’s cameras to focus in on the body of the lifeless fly.

Give Bush The Boot!
President Bush was given an Iraqi-journalist-style sendoff on his last full day in office Monday, as tourists and demonstrators lobbed shoes, pumps, boots, sandals and Crocs from Pennsylvania Avenue onto the White House lawn.

Before launching the operation live, the shoe-chuckers took target practice in Dupont Circle on a 20-foot-tall blow up doll of the outgoing president, decked out in the flight suit he wore aboard the "Mission Accomplished" aircraft carrier.

Duck! It's George double-shoe Bush: An Iraqi journalist, Muntadar al-Zeidi, hurled his own shoes at George W Bush during a press conference. The Iraqi journalist remained in custody.

Duck!
Dubya was pelted at a press briefing with Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki to mark a troop withdrawal agreement.

Muntadar al-Zeidi, a TV reporter with an Iraqi-owned station based in Egypt, hurled his own shoes, yelling in Arabic: “This is a farewell kiss, dog.”

Bush aide Dana Perino was hit in the eye with a mic as guards rushed to grab him. To Arabs, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt.

No, Lizzie Grubman's still alive. This is an actual monster, some sort of rodent-like creature with a dinosaur beak. A tipster says that there is "a government animal testing facility very close by in Long Island," but unless the government is trying to design horrible Montauk monsters that will eat IEDs and fart fire at bad Iraqis, we're not sure why they would create such an unthinkable beast. Our guess is that it's viral marketing for something. Ali Lohan's new album perhaps. Click thru for larger dino-damage.

Losing Private Dwyer
The photo below captures everything that Americans wanted to believe about the Iraq war in the earliest days of the invasion in 2003. Pfc. Joseph Dwyer, an Army medic whose unit was fighting its way up the Euphrates to Baghdad, cradles a wounded boy. The child is half-naked and helpless, but trusting. Private Dwyer’s face is strained but calm.

Female suicide bomber kills 15 in Iraq
A female suicide bomber struck near a government compound northeast of Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 15 people and wounding 40, police said. Nearly 20 suicide attacks this year have been carried out by women.

The bomber detonated her explosives in front of a heavily guarded area that includes the courthouse, the post office and the governor's offices in the city of Baqouba, a police officer said.

The 15 killed included seven policemen, the officer said, giving the casualty toll on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information.

The attack occurred about 1 p.m., a time when large numbers of people were visiting the compound.

'My daughter deserved to die for falling in love': The story of a father who beat his 17-year-old daughter to death after he found out that she has fallen in love with a British soldier.
Two weeks after The Observer revealed the shocking story of Rand Abdel-Qader, 17, murdered because of her infatuation with a British soldier in Basra, southern Iraq, her father is defiant. For Abdel-Qader Ali there is only one regret: that he did not kill his daughter at birth. 'If I had realised then what she would become, I would have killed her the instant her mother delivered her,' he said with no trace of remorse.
