MRT Breakdown

The Transport Minister writes,
I have been following the incident of the MRT breakdown from Cambodia. I am especially concerned over the well-being of the people who were reported to be trapped in the trains for an extended period of time before they made their way to safety.

There have been a number of train disruptions in recent days. I do not know if these are isolated incidents or whether there are systemic and more serious underlying issues causing these breakdowns. We will therefore conduct a thorough health check on our train systems, determine how the faults happened and also whether the maintenance, communication and recovery processes were adhered to and can be further improved.

I have asked LTA to assemble a team of relevant experts, including possibly relevant overseas experts to help us in this review.

Pilot, passenger safe after plane crashes into ferris wheel: The pilot of the light Cheetah S200 crashed the plane into a Ferris Wheel at the Old Bar Beach Festival held in Australia.

A pilot and passenger spent more than two hours stuck in a ferris wheel after their plane crashed into the ride at the Old Bar Beach Festival earlier today.

Two children – a nine-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl - were on the fun ride at the time but miraculously escaped injury.

After 90 minutes emergency services safely removed the children.

The pilot of the light Cheetah S200, a 53-year-old Taree man, and his passenger, a 32-year-old Queensland man, were unhurt and were freed from the wreckage about 12.45pm.

A crane is currently being used to extract the plane from the ferris wheel. This is expected to take a few hours.

The road, however, has been re-opened.

Air Safety investigators will examine the circumstances surrounding the crash

Sultan of Brunei brother Prince Jefri doesn't want jurors to see pix of statues that show him having sex: Prince Jefri, the brother of the Sultan of Brunei, is banning a jury from seeing pictures of 'erotic statues' he kept in his $11 million Long Island home.

The outrageous brother of the Sultan of Brunei has finally learned humility — he wants to bar a Manhattan jury from seeing statues that portray him having sex.

Lawyers for Prince Jefri — a notorious high-flying and hard partying playboy — have asked the judge overseeing his upcoming civil trial against his former attorneys to ban the jury from seeing pictures of the "erotic statues" he kept on his $11 million Long Island estate. Mark Cymrot, the lawyer for the British attorneys, said there are four statues in all, which Jefri had commissioned from renowned artist J. Seward Johnson. One depicts the prince, another is of one of his fiances, and the other two are "graphic" depictions of them having sex.

Total Solar Eclipse of 2009 July 22: Using the Solar Eclipse Calculator at NASA, the eclipse will occur on Wednesday between 08:40:51 AM to 09:43:55 AM Singapore time.

On Wednesday, 2009 July 22, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half of Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. After leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan's Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean where the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 min 39 s. A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes most of eastern Asia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Ocean
According to Shanghai Daily, Jinshan City Beach in Shanghai is the best spot to catch the eclipse.
NASA says suburban Shanghai will be one of the best spots in the world to catch Wednesday's astronomical phenomenon, reports Tan Weiyun.

Jinshan City Beach may be the best spot in Shanghai to catch the total solar eclipse next Wednesday.

According to a report from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, one of the better places to catch the eclipse is in Shanghai's suburban Jinshan District, which is along the Hangzhou Bay.

So far the beach's management committee has signed deals with more than 45 international travel agencies and astronomy groups, arranging for more than 1,300 people from 12 countries and regions to see the eclipse on Wednesday.

Who has 5000+ cars in his garage?: If you were rich enough to drive any car you wanted, absolutely any car, and money is no object, what would you go for? A Lambo, Bugatti, Merc, Aston, how about something outrageous like a Formula 1 car. But what if you were truly rich, not just “getting by” like that Bill Gates guy, but truly rich.

Snapshot of what you will see in this person's garage.

And the garage belongs to The Sultan of Brunei.

His collection which may well be far more than 5000 vehicles is estimated to have cost over $4 billion, filling them all up may be a little expensive at $4 a gallon, that is estimated at a minimum of half a million dollars.

Stolen garden elf is returned after a 7-month adventure around the world : Eve and Derrick Stuart-Kelso lost a 10-inch high stone leprechaun which they placed outside their home in Gloucester. 11 months after disappearing, the gnome appeared on the Stuart-Kelso's doorstep last week. Next to the gnome was a photo album containing 48 pictures of the gnome's trip around the globe to places like Singapore, Thailand, South Africa, New Zealand.

On top of the world: The gnome takes a cable car ride in Singapore
The 8lb gnome appeared on the Stuart-Kelso's doorstep on Thursday last week, some 11 months after disappearing.

A little the worse for wear, the traveller was standing next to a mysterious and tightly-wrapped parcel.

Once unwrapped it revealed a leather-bound photo album containing 48 pictures of the gnome's trip around the globe along with a note putting his impromptu world tour down to 'itchy feet'.

The painstakingly compiled album, complete with index, showed their gnome - renamed Barrington by his travel companions - abseiling down a mountain, standing in a shark's mouth, swimming in the sea, and riding a motorbike. Also with him were immigration stamps for all the shores he had been taken to visit - South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong and Laos.

A witty note, purporting to be from Barrington, referred to his 'travelling companion' only as The Bear, and told the couple how he attracted unwanted attention from customs officials and took up 25 per cent of the party's luggage allocation.

The only clue, however, to the identity of those companions was a photograph of a group of grinning young men.

Stunned: Grandmother Eve Stuart-Kelso found her gnome on her doorstep, with a letter and photo album of his travels

The letter reads:
Hello! First of all I feel I should explain my prolonged absence. A gnome's life is full of time for reflection, and whilst surveying your garden one summer morning, I began to get itchy feet.

I came to the conclusion that the world is a big place and there is more to life than watching the daily commuter traffic, and allowing passing cats to urinate on you.

So I decided to free myself from the doldrums of the Shire and seek adventure. My travels have taken me across three continents, 12 countries and more time zones than I can possibly remember.

A search is ongoing for a Singapore Management University (SMU) first-year student who fell into the sea off Raffles Marina at Tuas West on Thursday.

He is identified as 22-year-old Levin Angsana, an Indonesian who is a Singapore permanent resident.

Channel NewsAsia understands that a group of five SMU Sailing Club students went out to sea at 1pm on Thursday to train on a 24-footer keel boat. At about 3.30pm, when the spinnaker of the boat fell into the waters and got caught under the boat, Levin went on a prone position to try to retrieve it. That was when he lost his balance and fell overboard. He tried to get near the back of the boat where it was easier to climb back in, but failed.

The skipper, ex-national sailor Renfred Tay, jumped in and managed to get hold of him. But when the boat neared them and they were thrown life jackets, Renfred reached to get a jacket and turned around to find Levin gone. None of the crew were wearing life jackets. The Maritime and Port Authority is conducting the ongoing search, and the police are assisting. Levin's parents also flew into Singapore from Brunei on Friday. He has a sister studying at a polytechnic.
