There was a protest on 7 Jun 2014 at Hong Lim Park against the Central Provident Fund's (CPF) Minimum Sum Scheme. Speakers at the event also called for better returns on CPF monies. The line-up of speakers at the "Return Our CPF" protest included former Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian, as well as Reform Party chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam. Also at the protest was blogger Roy Ngerng, who is currently involved in a defamation suit by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after he alleged in a blogpost that Mr Lee misappropriated CPF savings. Mr Ngerng called for more transparency in the CPF system and said Singaporeans should be able to withdraw all their CPF savings once they hit retirement age.

A Singapore flag was burnt by demonstrators in the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) on 13 May 2014.

Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement released on 15 May that it considers this a “serious incident” as the flag is a sacred symbol which should be “treated with respect”.

The Singapore embassy in Hanoi has conveyed Singapore’s “strong concerns” over the flag burning to the Vietnamese government.

Singapore performance artist Lee Wen is in hospital here after blacking out on Saturday evening in a university toilet and waking up with abrasions on his face.

A scan has found no blood clots, and he is being warded overnight for observation.

Speculation has been rife on Facebook that the artist was attacked after he expressed concern at an arts forum here about Tiananmen soldier-turned-artist Chen Guang. Chen was arrested by Beijing this month after he privately staged a work of performance art to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen incident.

His gallerist Helina Chan of the iPreciation Gallery told The Straits Times early Sunday morning that Mr Lee could not recall if he indeed had been beaten up.

When Sunil first moved to Singapore, he had trouble finding an apartment.

"I called up several landlords who had listed rooms for rent," Sunil, a Sri Lankan who spent eight years living in the UK, said.

"Things would start out OK, maybe because of my [Western] accent - but the moment they heard my name, they'd blank out. Many said 'sorry, we don't rent to these people', or 'sorry, no room for Indians'."

Sunil, a civil engineer who arrived in 2012, said he was rejected by at least four landlords.

The developed world’s wealthiest cities are facing housing crises so acute that not only low-income workers, but also the middle and creative classes, find them increasingly difficult places to afford. Redfin, the real estate website, recently found that there was not a single home on the market in San Francisco that would be affordable on a teacher’s salary. And that was just for buyers; in many cities, renting is even more expensive.

Luxury towers are sprouting up, adding density to unlikely places, from the Brooklyn waterfront to San Francisco’s Mid-Market district. But adding inventory to the high end does nothing to help the middle — one of the many irritating peculiarities of the 21st-century boomtown housing market. Building new apartments can actually push rents higher, and amenities for the masses, like transportation and parks, may have the effect of pricing them out. Everyone wants to live in these places, so no one can afford to. What’s a global city to do?

There is one city that has managed to surmount this problem. The achievement of near-universal affordable housing in a place with limited land mass might be a beacon of hope, were it not for the fact that it is Singapore, a sovereign city-state with one-party rule, wonky leaders, an economy that has grown rapidly in the last half-century and one of the highest per-capita incomes on earth. There, more than 80 percent of the population lives in public housing designed with walkability, ethnic diversity and green space in mind.

We thought the ST ought to be burnt as its reporting rubbish for many years and an international disgrace to our country. Its press ranking has been dropping throughout the years and though SPH don't care, as citizens we are bothered by the lack of a free press. Now the government wants to curtail the internet too...I thought we are a democratic society? By the way, we have picked up the debris after the burn and there is no injury to anyone or property nearby.

Petition to reduce National Service
National defense is important for Singapore. However, we should review our approach to make sure that the budget and resources are effectively used to produce the desired outcome.

Our defense budget is high as a proportion of GDP in relation to other countries. We also require our male citizens to spend two years full time for military training and to be called back for reservist training over a period of up to 15 years.

Two years is too long. In many countries that have conscription, they are able to achieve their training within 12 months.

Anton Casey, the British fund manager who mocked the 'poor people' of Singapore on Facebook, has been sacked and forced to flee the country for Australia.
Casey, 39, took a Singapore Airlines flight to Perth on Friday but not before first apologising for the biggest mistake in his life and offering to do ''community service''.

The angry reaction to his Facebook insults had left his situation and that of his former Miss Singapore wife, Bernice Wong, and son in the island state untenable.

Casey who worked for a small financial company called CrossInvest, and who occasionally appeared on local television as a financial pundit, had displayed, claimed angry Singaporeans, 'intolerable arrogance'. CrossInvest said in a statement: "[Casey's] comments go against our core corporate and family values that are based on trust, mutual understanding and are respectful of diversity.

"Accordingly, CrossInvest Asia and Mr Casey have parted ways with immediate effect."
